An analog face can keep its character when the screen dims. Often the useful pieces are already in the design: luminous hand sections, numerals, hour markers and the outer minute track. Studio’s Tools → Design always-on tool can prepare an ambient scene from those elements while leaving Normal mode intact.

Choose the details that carry the design

Save the editable master, then open Tools → Design always-on. The starting proposal recognizes supported time elements and sparse dial details. Choose a treatment and compare it with the normal face. Balanced, outline, dim and bright-shape treatments suit different artwork; a textured dial may need a different treatment from its hands.

For a luminous design, try a black or heavily dimmed background while retaining the original bright hands, markers and chapter ring. The ring can help the whole face read at a glance. Remove it only if that is the design you want, rather than using its removal to hide one stray fragment.

The generated scene excludes seconds and second-dependent animation. Check any remaining date or metric elements for usefulness and legibility. A crowded dark version of every normal-mode detail is rarely the clearest ambient layout.

Inspect both the whole dial and small problem areas

The comparison includes different times so the hands cross different parts of the dial. Look at the complete face first: the time should remain readable and the border should look deliberate. Then enlarge suspicious areas around hand edges, numbers, calendar windows and the outer ring. If you are also changing the lettering, review every calendar label on the dial before judging the ambient version.

Flattened artwork can contain a bright scrap of background that the tool treats as a luminous detail. Advanced recipes use exclude_regions and retain_regions for narrow repairs or a ring around a dark center. Each region identifies a source bitmap layer, with its coordinates expressed as fractions of that image. Save the recipe, revise those fields in its JSON, then use Load AOD recipe to inspect the result before applying it. Check the new render after each adjustment; a mask that works at one hand position may expose something elsewhere.

Download the comparison and save the recipe with the reviewed master. Recipes refer to particular source layers and the design’s hash. If the source changes, revisit the recipe instead of assuming the old choices still identify the same pixels.

Apply a proposal you can undo

Previewing or canceling leaves the project unchanged. Apply AOD makes one undoable change, and the generated ambient elements remain editable layers. Existing ambient artwork stays in the master but is hidden when the new proposal is applied.

Regeneration uses the selected recipe and replaces generated layers. Save a copy before regenerating if you want to retain manual changes to those layers. Normal artwork should remain unchanged; compare it after applying the ambient design.

If the source includes another authored AOD scene, inspect Conversion review → Original AOD scene where available. That can be a better starting point than generating a new one. Add basic AOD clock is also available when you deliberately want a simple clock.

Check the build separately

Studio samples times, hour modes and metric values and reports a lit-pixel estimate. Use the worst sample to find an unexpectedly bright state. That estimate does not cover every date, condition, user configuration or physical display.

Build the saved project, then inspect actual ambient rendering on a compatible watch or emulator. The Wear OS APK installation guide covers pairing and common installation errors. Make sure you are viewing the face’s ambient state: a completely off screen or a charging overlay does not show whether the design is correct. Check the clock, deliberate border and repaired regions again.

Google’s Wear OS quality requirements define separate illumination and memory checks. A good-looking comparison and a successful build do not establish battery life or full-day compliance. Keep the reviewed renders, recipe and exact build together so a later change can be checked against the same evidence.
